Field Study working with a small group of students
January 5, 2009 | Tagged early_literacy, reading | 13 Comments
I am a grade five teacher who will be lucky enough to have a student teacher from January to March.
I have three students in my class who have learning problems and I would like to use technology to help focus on their reading and writing skills. I will be able to have some individual time with these students and want to set up a program that uses technology to aid in writing and improve their reading.
My students have all had an opportunity to work on the Destination Reading Site and enjoyed being able to listen to stories and then answer comprehension questions. I hope to be able to give the students an opportunity to hear stories on Tumblebooks.
I am wondering if anyone else knows of other sites that focus on reading or writing. Free sites would be the best but as one of my students is ministry identified I may be able to get some funding if there is a good resource out there.

Brenda, this is a useful network for BC teachers:
http://bcliteracyforum.ning.com/ If you don’t find resources directly related to your search I’m sure you’ll be able to connect with others who can help!
Check out SET BC. They have great resources.
Several teachers on my staff have used a site called razkids with their students that have learning difficulties. I believe it does cost money for a site licence, but it would be worth the cost. These staff members really find it useful .
A couple of websites I have bookmarked:

You might try having your students create podcasts for younger students-they get to work on fluency as well as producing something they can be proud of.
Hi Brenda,
Like Jagdeep said, Set BC has good stuff – stories that can be read or even recorded stories.
We have Reading A-Z and Raz Kids at our school and I’ve used them regularly – but you need to order them.

Good luck.
Thanks everyone for all the great ideas. I will spend some time looking at the sites in the next couple of days.

Hi Brenda,
Try contacting your local librarian. I first heard about Tumblebooks from the librarian at Terry Fox Library- Fraser Valley Regional Library. It’s also a great field trip for the kids and an opportunity for them to get their own library card.
The librarian there is a wealth of information. I’m sure she can help steer you in the right direction.
Good luck!
Try this link for some literacy activities.

http://www.wordle.net/
Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends.
Not sure if these will be too young…I’ve used tumblebooks and just kept changing my passwords to keep up my trial copy.
Also you may want to look at

Hope these sites are appealing to your students
Hi Brenda,
School District #42 is now offering a great data base for all district staff, families and students. Go to schools.sd42.ca/erac/ and search for your grade and subjects.
Also, writingfix.com has some interesting pages with lots of tips for the writing process. They also promote the sales of many of their resources but if you do lots of searching you’ll find some great information without having to purchase anything.
Carol…thanks for posting the Wordle site info…what a neat site!
Intothebook is an amazing resource for teaching reading comprehension following the ideas of Reading Power. Check it out!
